Freshwater Aquarium Fish

Freshwater AquariumI remember well the day my precious fifty gallon Freshwater Aquarium Fish tank exploded in my Mom’s living room in the early hours of the morning! I was awoken by one frantic unhappy mother who announced that there was two inches of water throughout the house with freshwater fish swimming down the hallway, tetra fish darting about the bookshelf and mollies flipping about on the tiled bathroom floor!

My adoring tropical freshwater fish hobby came to a dramatic halt that year. Mom had the whole house painted and carpeted by my Dad and I (I’m sure she was secretly delighted!).

It wasn’t until some years later, when I had left home that I took up my passion once again keeping Freshwater Aquarium Fish and saltwater aquarium fish. I had learnt from my mistake and have never had a popping fish aquarium since!

Freshwater fish are very easy to keep, unlike their cousins the saltwater aquarium fish. When starting out it may be best to keep your hobby simple with hardy coldwater fish species such as the common goldfish. As you progress you can landscape your Freshwater Aquarium with pebbles, colourful stones, logs and fresh water plants and introduce a community of tropical fish. Or you could go a step further and populate your aquarium fish tank with striking fish such as the exotic tropical fish discus collected from the Amazon River.

If you are thinking of owning a freshwater aquarium I highly recommend Sandra Gaffney's book "My Freshwater Aquarium Secrets". She explains in detail how to keep and maintain a healthy colorful freshwater aquarium. To view her book offer, simply click the CD image above or her book in the side bar. Her quality information, her money back guarantee and the extra bonuses she gives make this offer well worth the small price tag.

The following tips will get you started with your Freshwater Aquarium Fish hobby:

* Wash the gravel thoroughly before putting it into your freshwater fish aquarium.

* Select only healthy compatible fish from your Freshwater Aquarium Fish dealer.

* Adequately heat your tropical freshwater fish tank so that water temperatures remain constant.

Freshwater Aquarium Fish can be broken up into four different categories: the egg layers, the live bearers, scavengers, and bubblenest builders.

Livebearers are usually the easiest Freshwater Fish to keep as they are very hardy and they breed easily. The colourful guppies, platies, sword tails and mollies fall into this category. Some of these fish, such as the mollies can also be kept in a saltwater aquarium as their native habitat is in the brackish estuarine waters.

The scavenger Freshwater Aquarium Fish includes the catfish and algae eaters. Very handy fish to have as they help keep your Freshwater Aquarium Fish tank clean. Beware… the algae eaters love to jump and, unless your tropical fish tank is well covered, they will meet a quick death on the floor.

The Betta Fish, or Simese Fighting Fish, is undoubtedly the most beautiful fish that ever adorned an aquarium, and probably one of the most interesting. They are one of the bubblenest builders and a must for a larger aquarium, although be warned they will attack other betas, or fish with long fins such as guppies.
