Pet Fish
Dog, cat, bird… why not Pet Fish?
In this article I’d like to point out the merits of keeping Pet Fish as opposed to the traditional pets.
Pet Fish make no noise other than the quiet rumble of an air pump or filter. Dogs howl and bark and cats meow and can fight with the neighbour’s cat. Birds will squawk and chatter.
Pet fish make no mess and they don’t smell. Dogs and cats drop fur and leave waste around the yard. They carry fleas and harbour worms. Birds leave feathers, spread seed and attract vermin. Pet rodents tend to smell and require regular cage cleaning. Many people have allergies towards feathered and haired animals.
Pet Fish are very easy to care for, only requiring occasional aquarium maintenance and cleaning. Although aquarium fish can suffer sicknesses and you will have some fatalities, they do not require the services of a costly animal doctor.
You don’t need to exercise fish like a regular pet. When you go away they are a lot less worrisome. They will survive for a few days without feeding and can be given weekend feeding blocks for longer periods.
Pet Fish are a very inexpensive. Fish food costs far less than dog or cat food. Buying a goldfish as a Pet Fish will only set you back a few dollars. However, costs do increase as your hobby develops. Establishing an elaborate marine aquarium will be expensive to set up. Dogs and cats require expensive medications, sterilization costs, vaccinations, pet foods and registration fees.
Best of all, fish are pleasing to watch. Watching them feeding, breeding and exploring your aquarium or fish pond is not only very entertaining, but very relaxing.
Some Pet Fish ideas:
Try releasing trout, goldfish and koi into your swimming pool during the winter months. They will grow rapidly and can be caught to eat or sell when the weather warms up.
Aquariums come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. Toilet cisterns, framed wall picture aquariums, pillar fish tanks and glass cubes all provide for interest as fish aquariums for your Pet Fish. Purchase them online at aquarium supplies stores.
Build a running stream and watch sword tails jump the water falls or create an above ground pond with a glass window to watch giant koi or goldfish.
Make a fish pond out of an old boat or sink some bath tubs into the ground.
Keep a beautiful Siamese fighting fish in a decorative fish tank or some colourful guppies in a glass fruit bowl.
Build an indoor pond for your Pet Fish out of a large ceramic flower pot or create a coffee table pond with a glass top for viewing the fish. A great talking piece when entertaining guests.
Lastly try making an aquarium lamp using a large glass bottle or glass vase.
Whether it be an exotic tropical freshwater aquarium stretching from wall to wall in your living room or a goldfish bowl for your children sitting on the kitchen table, there is a place for Pet Fish in every home.
